President, Governor express grief

HYDERABAD: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Andhra Pradesh Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde expressed grief at the loss of several lives in the train accident in Nalongda district early on Friday.

Dr. Kalam telephoned Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and enquired about the accident. He complimented the State Government for taking up timely relief and rescue operations.

Separately, in a message, he said he was saddened at the deaths and expressed the hope that authorities were engaged in rescue work and in providing relief to the injured. "Kindly accept my condolences and convey my grief to the next of kin of those who lost their lives," he added.

Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde, in a message, expressed shock and distress at the tragic derailment of the train, which claimed several lives. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.

Probe sought

Several political parties and AITUC expressed grief at the tragedy.

They demanded an inquiry into the accident and bringing out of facts.

CPI (M) State committee secretary B.V. Raghavulu urged the Government to expedite relief work and provide compensation to victims' families.

CPI State secretary K. Narayana faulted the failure of the railway vigilance in detecting the vulnerable areas.
