JD(U) seeks Natwar resignation
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Janata Dal (United) on Saturday sought the resignation of Union External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh for his alleged involvement in the "kickbacks" in the Oil-for-Food programme of the United Nations as exposed by the Independent Inquiry Committee headed by Paul A. Volcker. "If he doesn't resign, he must be sacked," said party general secretary and spokesman Shambhu Srivastava here today.
He also demanded that Congress President Sonia Gandhi quit from the party post as the Congress is also alleged to be a beneficiary of the "kickbacks" as revealed in the report. "Interestingly, the contracting company in the case of the Congress party as well as Natwar Singh is Masefield AG, a company based in Switzerland," he said.
Seeking a CBI probe into the allegations, Mr. Srivastava said, "Since it is the report of an independent committee set up by the U.N. Secretary-General, there is enough basis for instituting a regular case by the CBI against Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Singh. The CBI should further investigate the details of the case to ascertain the involvement of others," he said adding that a FIR be lodged immediately.
