EXCHANGING IDEAS: Mayor of Manglaore K. Ashraf having a word with the Commissioner Chandrappa during the council meeting in Mangalore on Saturday.
MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation was assured on Saturday by the engineering division that water distribution will be back to normal from Monday as repairs in the Thumbe reservoir pumping station have been carried out successfully. Replying to councillors questions, Executive Engineer of the corporation Suresh Babu said that the intake well in the Thumbe reservoir has been restored and desilted. This will enable the pumping machinery to draw the full quota of 20 million gallons a day as against the 10 million gallons being pumped during the past fortnight Councillors from the Bhratiya Janata Party and Congress demanded that officials responsible for the well going bad be admonished inside the council hall. However, Mayor K. Ashraf said that will not be appropriate and there is no provision to admonish officials on the floor of the council. The Mayor's statement sparked off a pandemonium that lasted for over half an hour. Councillors cutting across party lines demanded to know why Mr. Ashraf was supporting the officials and challenged him to institute an inquiry into the conditions that led to the breakdown of the water distribution system in the city for a fortnight. Muralidhar Bolar (BJP) said the corporation is not taking any action against those having illegal water connections. Promising to take action against such people, Mr. Ashraf ordered that the incidences of illegal connections be dealt with and fines be imposed on defaulters. The council meeting witnessed pandemonium for the second time when the Opposition BJP asked the Mayor about the raids conducted by the Lokayukta on Thursday on various offices of the Mangalore City Corporation. Councillor Ganesh Rao said the Lokayukta had observed that there is widespread corruption in the revenue section of the corporation . When Mr. Ashraf refused to make an observation the BJP councillors wanted the Mayor to resign and take responsibility for the alleged corruption in the corporation offices.
