CHENNAI: Rural tourism, a project launched a year ago, would be extended to villages across the country including in Tamil Nadu, Renuka Chowdhury, Union Minister of State for Tourism, said on Saturday. Participating in Andhra Pradesh Day and the Telugu language festival, organised by World Telugu Federation, she said the project was on in 35 villages in seven States. Fifty more villages had been identified. This project would enable tourists to learn about rural heritage and performing arts. She assured the Federation that she would strive to get Telugu, classical language status. This year was being celebrated as the golden jubilee year of Andhra Pradesh with November 1 being observed as A.P. Day. The evolution of the state and the history of Telugu language were highlighted by the speakers. P.R.Rama Subramaneya Rajha, chairman of RAMCO Industries, and A.Kamala Chandra Babu, film artist and national billiards champion were honoured. A.B.K.Prasad, chairman of A.P. Official Language Commission, wanted Telugu to be made the second official language in Tamil Nadu. Speakers included G.V.S.R. Krishna Murthy, former head, Department of Telugu, University of Madras, V.L.Indira Dutt, president of the federation and B.S.R.Krishna, secretary of the federation, participated.
