Countrywide red alert

NEW DELHI: A red alert was sounded across the country after a series of blasts rocked Delhi on Saturday, killing at least 50 people and leaving more than a hundred injured.

Security has been beefed up in several States and important cities. Security forces have been asked to keep strict vigil around important government buildings and vital installations, including railway stations, airports and inter-state bus terminals. Special security arrangements have been made in religious and crowded places where people are shopping for Diwali and Eid.

A `red alert' was sounded in the national capital as security was tightened at its borders with the neighbouring States and places of public importance.

The Delhi police sealed all entry and exit points to the capital. Barricades were set up on all major roads and vehicles were being randomly checked. Security was also increased at railway stations, airport and Delhi Metro.

A report from Lucknow quoting Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha said directives had been issued to every district for stepping up security in sensitive places, government buildings, railway stations, airports and communally sensitive areas, besides conducting intensive checks in various districts bordering Delhi.

In Himachal Pradesh, security was intensified with the deployment of additional forces around all important government buildings and vital installations, Ajit Narayan, DGP, said.

Security was stepped up in the business centres of Madhya Pradesh, including Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain and Malwanchal, besides the State capital.
