Curb illegal border movement, India tells Bangladesh

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: India, on Saturday, expressed concern over illegal cross-border movement from Bangladesh and stressed the need for putting in place a mechanism or protocol to tackle the problem. Both sides also agreed to provide consular access to insurgents and criminals held by either side.

Bangladesh also agreed to expedite its response to the Indian proposal of having an extradition treaty and an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

At the end of the two-day Home Secretary-level talks, the two sides issued a joint statement, agreeing to work closely on security-related issues. The talks went on till the early hours and the agreed minutes were signed in the presence of mediapersons in the morning.

Home Secretary V.K. Duggal, who signed the statement with his Bangladesh counterpart Sarfaraz Hossain, said they interacted in a "friendly atmosphere with a spirit of cooperation." The discussions were "constructive with a positive frame of mind," he said.
