MADURAI: The faculty members of Industrial Training Institutes are in a position to update themselves with emerging technologies in order to equip students to face stiff challenges ahead, said K. Panneerselvam, Regional Joint Director, Department of Employment and Training. Briefing presspersons here on Thursday, he said that in the wake of globalisation newer technologies had emerged and requirement for well-trained technicians was increasingly felt, he said. The industrial training institutes, which had taken the responsibility of transforming those with limited education into employable citizens, were left with no other option but to equip themselves with adequate infrastructure facilities for which the Government support was must, he said. On their part, the Confederation of Industrial Training Technical Officials had recently organised a State-level conference on `Changing industrial scenario and challenges in providing world class industrial training,' to discuss various issues and evolved strategies to tackle challenges ahead, he said. The society should understand the significance of industrial training as most of the people opt for ITIs only as a last resort. Whereas, in Western countries almost 90 to 95 percent of the people opt for industrial training before going for higher education, he said.
Language the hurdle
Attributing the poor pass percentage to the language in which the question papers were set, he said, most of the students who joined ITIs in Tamil Nadu were from rural background and they found it tough to answer questions in English. Resolutions were passed in the conference seeking the authorities to frame questions and bring out textbooks in Tamil and to urge the Government to fill the existing teaching vacancies in ITIs. Besides, the conference stressed for establishment of Advanced Training Institute to train the ITI faculty members on modern technologies, he said.
