Iodised salt campaign: Collector seeks report from headmasters

Staff Reporter

"Medical officers must hold salt testing demonstration"

MADURAI: Collector D. Raajendiran on Wednesday asked all the school headmasters to submit a report on steps taken for propagation of using iodised salt among students.

He directed Chief Educational Officer K. Sridevi to get feedback from schools and prepare a comprehensive report on the awareness campaign. He also directed medical officers and Health department officials to conduct salt testing demonstrations in schools, as at the government level a lot of importance was attached to popularising use of iodised salt in every home in the interest of physical and mental growth of children.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Health department to mark `Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day.' "Let the school headmasters give a report to the Chief Educational Officer. I want every school to do it sincerely." Mr. Raajendiran said and insisted that the campaign on iodised salt must reach elementary schools.

He said medical officers must visit schools in their jurisdiction and take testing kits to hold demonstration on iodine content. The Collector also wanted the Health department to give adequate display at the Primary Health Centres for the benefit of rural people.

Deputy Director of Health Services S. Shanmugasundaram explained the measures taken for the awareness campaign in schools. Earlier, Mr. Raajendiran distributed iodised salt packets to school students and told them to take the message to their parents.
