MADURAI: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) activity in Madurai region got a major fillip on Saturday with the Madurai Kamaraj University formally deciding to allot 4.5 acres of its land to the Madurai Group NCC for establishing a `permanent camping site.' The land is situated behind the university buildings. This gesture from the MKU will have a significant impact on the NCC movement as 23,600 cadets belonging to Madurai Group, drawn from Madurai to Kanyakumari, can be trained at a single permanent location instead of moving from one college to the other at the time of camps. The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said the Buildings Committee had given the official concurrence for allotting the land to the NCC and allowing it to hold its camps there. Formal handing over of the land to the cadets would be completed soon, after which, construction of barracks would be taken up. "This is a service to benefit thousands of youngsters in this part of the State," the Vice-Chancellor said. Welcoming the university's decision, the NCC authorities said a permanent camping site would enable the NCC to hold training for all the wings Army, Navy and Girls. According to Lt. Col. I. Nagarajan, NCC coordinator, Thiagarajar College, there are 13 units under Madurai region with its reach spread over Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Nagercoil, among other places.
Will aid State-level camps
While conducting State-level camps, a single location would be very helpful, more so at the time of national integration camps. Accommodation, toilet facilities etc would be established, he said. Also, the university land is an ideal location for short-range firing and shooting training for the cadets, he said.
