Shoppers have it easy at T. Nagar
P. Oppili
CHENNAI:
The police are facing an uphill task regulating traffic this Deepavali season.
But some of the measures taken by the local and traffic police have helped shoppers on Usman Road and at Panagal Park.
The police have put up barricades from the T. Nagar terminus to the Duraisamy Road-Usman Road junction to prevent pedestrians spilling on to the carriageway. Police personnel regulate the crowds.
S. Murugan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, T. Nagar, said 75,000 people used North Usman Road, Usman Road, Duraisamy Road and Nageswara Road every hour on Saturday. Closed-circuit TV cameras monitored the movement of people. In each shop, a constable in plainclothes has been posted.
About 350 personnel, including those from the Tamil Nadu Special Police, are posted at T. Nagar. From nine watchtowers, personnel use the public address system to regulate the crowd and make announcements about those missing.
