Rs. 50 lakhs for storm water drains at Velachery, Taramani

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu announced on Saturday a grant of Rs. 50 lakhs for construction of storm water drains at Velachery and Taramani from the MP's Local Area Development Fund.

According to an official release, Mr. Baalu, who inspected flood-hit areas in south Chennai, told the Chennai Corporation Commissioner that more funds would be released if required. He wanted officials to address the problems faced by the residents of flood-hit Nehru Nagar of Velachery division. He visited AGS Colony, Udayam Nagar, Lakshmipuram, Ambedkar Nagar and Kakkan Nagar; Mahatma Gandhi Nagar and Periyar Nagar in Taramani, besides the pedestrian subways in Alandur and Tambaram.

He asked officials to provide backup inverters to ensure continued functioning of pump sets, convert handrails to stainless steel and provide at least 50 per cent lighting in subways during power cuts.

Tambaram MLA, M.A. Vaidyalingam, told the Minister that damaged culverts in Railways land caused the inundation of the Vijayanagar area with the flood water released from Velachery lake.
