Parts of Velachery remain flooded

Link roads to suburbs cut off due to stagnating water

  • Inundation, lack of power supply in Madipakkam and Puzhithivakkam
  • Flooding in subways hampers traffic

CHENNAI: Nearly two days after rain stopped, several parts of Velachery and the nearby suburbs of Puzhithivakkam and Madipakkam are flooded.

The interior roads in the east and the west are lying under a sheet of water, as the local lake is overflowing.

Parts of Ashtalakshmi Nagar, Ramakrishna Nagar, E.B. Colony, Nethaji Colony, Brindavan Nagar Extension, Andal Nagar, A.G.'s Colony and Srinagar Colony are flooded. So are parts of MGR Nagar. The link roads to the rest of the suburbs are cut off due to stagnating floodwater.

Vijaya Nagar Tenth Main Road, Ram Nagar Third Street, Fourth Street, Muruga Nagar First, Second, Third and Fourth Streets, Padmavathi Nagar and Padmavathi Nagar Extension are under four feet of water.

K.S. Ravi, a resident of Muruga Nagar Fourth Street, said: "The rainwater has entered many houses in Padmavathi Nagar as the height of the road has been increased."

Most areas in East Velachery, including Annai Indira Nagar, Kambar Street, Thiruvalluvar Street, Anna Nagar, Anna Nagar Extension, Kathiravan Nagar, Sarathy Nagar Fifth Street and VGP Selva Nagar near the Pallikaranai marsh are affected.

The flooding of Tansi Nagar 19th Street and 20th Street, an important link road for the residents of Anna Nagar and Anna Nagar Extension, has only made matters worse.

After two days of blackout, electricity is being restored in phases. "Electricity was restored in Annai Indira Nagar only at 3 p.m. on Saturday," says S. Kumararaja, a resident of Annai Indira Nagar.

Similarly, Srinivasa Nagar and Ramalinga Nagar in Puzhithivakkam and Ram Nagar South in Madipakkam are under two feet of water. A canal has been dug up to drain out water. But encroachers are resisting the widening of the outlet, as draining is taking time, the residents allege.

    Subways flooded

Subways at St. Thomas Mount, Thillai Ganga Nagar and Palavanthangal continue to be filled with water, causing serious traffic problems.

According to a press release from the Alandur Municipality, water was bailed out from the subways.

    B. Valarmathi, Minister for Rural Industries, inspected the subways and asked the Highways staff, the R. Venkatesan, Kancheepuram Collector, Kancheepuram District and A.B. Dhayalamoorthy, Municipal Commissioner, to expedite the work.
