Greenpeace activists stage rally

Attempt to collect signatures in front of a showroom

  • Campaign to sensitise people about companies which use Hydrofluorocarbons in refrigerators
  • Over 200 signatures collected in Hyderabad in the last two days

HYDERABAD: Greenpeace volunteers caused a mild commotion in Begumpet on Saturday, when they tried to collect signatures of people in front of Tirumala Music Centre (TMC) for their campaign against the manufacturers of refrigerators that cause global warming.

The campaign was to sensitise people about the MNCs which use the Hydrofluorocarbons in refrigerators which damages the Ozone layer causing global warming. However, most of these MNCs use less harmful coolants and insulators for refrigerators to be sold in Western countries, they alleged.

    Pamphlets

The Greenpeace volunteers sprang a surprise, when one of them began distributing pamphlets to the customers in the posh shop, which sells refrigerators of the MNCs. The shop assistants immediately caught him and called the police.

"We are organising a signature campaign against some companies which are using hydrofluorocarbons for cooling and hydrochlorofluorocarbons for insulation in refrigerators in India." said Energy Campaigner of Green Peace, K. Srinivas.

A safer, more environment-friendly alternative is available in the form of the `Greenfreeze technology' developed by Greenpeace, which uses hydrocarbons or R600a. Though this technology is available in India, Godrej was the only company to use it, they said.

Greenpeace volunteers managed to get 200 signatures in Hyderabad in the last two days.

Volunteers who staged a rally outside TMC were taken to task by the General Manager of TMC, K. Kameswara Rao, who complained that they used TMC's brand name to garner publicity though his company had nothing to do with the rally.
