Mayor breaks down

R. Narayanaswamy becomes emotional after corporators heap praise on him

BANGALORE: Mayor R. Narayanaswamy, who will lay down office on November 29, broke down in the last meeting of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council chaired by him on Saturday.

In his reply to the praise showered by corporators from all parties, the Mayor became emotional and even wept. Though he was normal when he started speaking, his voice choked after a few minutes.

"If I have been able to do anything worthwhile for the city and the people, it is because of the cooperation from my colleagues from all parties in the council, the officials led by Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam and presspersons," he said with tears in his eyes.

Apologising for any "mistakes" committed by him during his tenure, the Mayor stopped for a short while to wipe his tears. Though the commissioner intervened and spoke for a few minutes to enable the Mayor to return to normal, it was of no help. Several corporators, even from the Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party came to his rescue and said the Mayor's sentiments showed how much he cared for the city and its people.

Reacting to the emotional scene, some women members, including Marimuttu, Mahalakshmi and Rajni Murthy, also became sentimental. They were also seen wiping their tears.
