dated October 31, 1955: US protest to Russia

The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, has protested to the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr. Vyacheslav Molotov, against shipments of Communist arms to Egypt. Mr. Dulles called on Mr. Molotov at his villa in Geneva on October 30 to reinforce a similar protest made to the Soviet leader on October 29 by Mr. Harold Macmillan, the British Foreign Secretary. Backstage diplomatic activity over the Middle East situation was swiftly reaching a peak this week-end. In addition to the Western representations to Russia, both Israel and the Arab States were putting their cases to the Big Powers. After the meeting with Mr. Molotov, Mr. Dulles saw the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Moshe Sharett, who presented his country's attitude to the arms deal. Sources said Mr. Dulles told Mr. Sharett that the US would consider sympathetically any Israeli request for defensive arms but was not prepared further to encourage the arms race.
