Government not interested in holding elections: Yediyurappa

BANGALORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly B.S. Yediyurappa has said the BJP will approach the Supreme Court if the Government decides to postpone the zilla and taluk panchayat elections.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that the coalition partners in the Government were not interested in holding the elections. First, the Government created confusion over the issue of reservation and took it to the Karnataka High Court. Later, in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court it held discussions with the State Election Commission and agreed to hold the elections. Now, it was planning to get the polls postponed on the pretext of natural calamities after the commission announced the election timetable. Both the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) were scared of facing the people as the Government had not released funds to the districts for the past seven months for development works, he said. Mr. Yediyurappa alleged that the Government had been depending heavily on Central funds for relief works in the flood-hit areas and in many rain-affected areas, including Bangalore.
