Sri Lakshmi murder case

The State High Court delivered its judgment on the Sri Lakhsmi murder case recently. It reduced the death sentence awarded by the district court to Manohar, the main accused in the case.

He was awarded life sentence. The murder turned out to be a sensation across the State. Manohar resorted to the cold-blooded killing after the girl did not reciprocate his love. He attacked her in the presence of students on the college premises and in the classroom.

War against graft

Corruption is believed to have penetrated into every sphere of activity. It is described as a widespread malaise of the modern generation. The tentacles of corruption are spreading fast in the society affecting the moral fabric and quality of the economic structure of the country, which has witnessed an unprecedented number of scams. It is time massive awareness programmes are conducted, while ensuring them the right to information. The Central Government should set an example by dismissing corrupt officials from service. The Government should confiscate all ill-gotten wealth. Only then will India be able to achieve success in its war against graft.

Check illegal phone tapping

It is reliably learnt that some people at the Nellore electronic telephone exchange indulge in illegal telephone tapping through interception and monitoring of certain domestic telephone conversation. This only puts consumers at risk and can lead to a situation when unscrupulous employees may blackmail innocent consumers.

This is not the case with private telecom operators, who are gaining popularity throughout India with their service. Also, some corrupt employees at the telephone exchange in Nellore are shielding obnoxious telephone callers. Instead of blaming privatisation, which is what all trade unions do, they should discipline their own workers who are actually ruining BSNL and not the competition. The time has come to check illegal telephone tapping under State Control of Organised Crimes Act, 2001.

Lionising Veerappan will not help

The slain brigand Veerappan is still revered and honoured by a Tamil group. The group's leaders paid their homage near Veerappan's grave at Moolakadu village on the first anniversary of his burial.

It is unfortunate that the Tamil leader Nedumaran expressed his anguish over the inordinate delay in the release of the judgment over the atrocities of the Special Task Force during the combing operations in the forests of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

It is even alarming to note that the bandit's wife Muthu Lakshmi has launched a movement for obtaining the rights of tribals, who live in the remote corners of the dense forests. Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Governments should impose a ban on Muthu Lakshmi and on the outfits.

Even other victims, who suffered a lot at the hands of the Special Task Force, demanded a ban on the activities of Muthu Lakshmi. As prevention is better than cure, it will be better to prevent Muthu Lakshmi from entering pubic life in the garb of a social worker.

A heartening gesture indeed

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's gesture in extending his helping hand to quake-hit Pakistan is praiseworthy. It is time to extend all help to quake victims. Kashmiris are badly hit due such devastation. In fact, it reflects Indian's love for fellow beings in distress and reminds the adage that affection blinds reasons.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. This gesture shows our relationship with them through our actions. A good deed is never lost. This gesture is the best confidence building measure between the two countries. Let us hope, this offer will go a long way in improving bilateral relations and ties.

Towards good administration

The heads of departments should rise to the occasion vis-à-vis public service. The problems brought to their notice through different forums should be addressed to. In the past, there was a custom for the departments to send replies to people who represented their grievances. The aim was to provide a good and amicable administration to the public.

It is also the responsibility of the heads of the institutions to reply to the published matter and also a duty of the Public Relations Department or the Planning Department to communicate the matter to the department concerned. But, at present, the Government has neglected the procedure completely. I request the Government to give proper responses.
