Residents demand full-fledged railway station at Vellayil

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE : The residents of Vellayil here demanded that the railway station here be elevated to Calicut North Station. The spacious building of the railway station had been dismantled as part of Kozhikode-Mangalore rail doubling work.

Now only a small building houses the railway station, which lacks basic facilities like toilet and drinking water. The passengers have to wait under the open sky to catch the train at the two platforms at the station as they lack a roof.

There is no station master at the station but only a halting agent. Residents say that the station has no proper lighting. The station is also a favourite haunt of anti-social elements.

The local people say that the halt for the Kannur-Kozhikode passenger (train no. 622) at the station was cancelled from July 2002. Representations to the MP and railway authorities did not yield any result, they allege.

Institutions like Malabar Christian College, Malabar Christian College HSS, MES College, Providence HSS, Vellayil School, District Industries Centre (DIC), Vaidyuthi Bhavan, All India Radio (AIR) and Hotel Taj Residency are close to the station. Also the Civil Station is close to the station.

They are demanding appointment of a permanent station master, restoring stop for Kannur-Kozhikode Passenger (Train no. 622) and stops for Mangalore-Coimbatore fast passenger and Parasuram Express.

The railway authorities, meanwhile, said that the station was a halt station for the last 20 years. The railway had fixed certain parameters and a halt station will be converted into a next stage (clerk-in-charge station or flag station) only if the collection exceeds certain revenue limit. The Vellayil station has being remaining a halt station because of the above reasons, they said.

But the local people say Kozhikode-Kannur passenger which starts in the morning has a stop at the station. The train gets a lot of passengers.

They claim that the revenue from the station for this train alone will be Rs.1.400 daily.

Another train, Kannur-Coimbatore (Train no. 619) which also halts at the station gets a daily revenue of Rs.1,750 from the station. So is the case with the Coimbatore-Kannur passenger (train no. 611).
