An occasion to gladden the hearts of the needy, says Kalam

NEW DELHI : President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has greeted the people on the occasion of Diwali, reminding them that festivals "are occasions for all of us to come forward in the service of humanity and gladden the hearts of the needy."

In a message, he said: ``As we light lamps, let us work and contribute in whichever way possible to reach help to those affected in recent mishaps and sufferings.

``I offer my greetings and good wishes to all my people in India and abroad and wish them happiness and prosperity. This festival of lights is a time for joy and happiness and hope for an even better future.''

Calling upon the people to celebrate Diwali in the true spirit with care and concern, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said, " May this festival bring peace, prosperity and happiness in our lives."
