CHENNAI: Differences over dividend payment in a fishing cooperative society at Tiruvottiyur, on the northern outskirts of the city , led to a group clash on Sunday night. Two persons who sustained cut injuries in the scuffle were admitted to hospital. The Tiruvottiyur police arrested six persons including the society president and his associates on charges of rioting. According to police, A.K.K.Sankar,president of Fishermen Cooperative Society which functions at Kasi Viswanathar Koil Kuppam , allegedly deducted about Rs. 100 from each member's dividend. This was objected to by one of the members, Megavarman. Following this a quarrel erupted between Mr. Megavarman and him. In the evening around 4 p.m. Mr. Megavarman went to attend a funeral. At that time, the president's brothers, A.K.K.Samy and Chockalingam, allegedly ransacked Megavarman's house and attacked his wife and son Lakshmi and Murugan. Both sustained sabre injuries and were admitted to hospital. Police said the group also ransacked 10 houses in the area. Following the attack, the police arrested A.K.K.Sankar, his two brothers and four of their associates. Cases were filed against them under various sections of the IPC including 307 (attempt to murder). The police are also on the lookout for a few more persons. Additional police pickets have been posted in the area, authorities added.
