This Day That Age
The Indonesian Vice-President, Dr. Mohammed Hatta, has described his present visit to India as a voyage of discovery. "We want to see and learn and I am confident we shall do both," said Dr. Hatta while proposing a toast to the President of India and prosperity of the Indian people at a luncheon given by the Sadar-I-Riyasat, Yuvaraj Karan Singh, in Srinagar on November 1. Dr. Hatta said that during his brief stay in Kashmir he hoped to "see something of the many sides" of the State. Everybody had heard of Kashmir but only a fortunate few had the chance to see for themselves its beauty. "We from Indonesia count ourselves the lucky ones and I am sure we shall long remember the warmth of your welcome even if our stay in your midst is confined to an all-too-short four days," he said. Yuvaraj Karan Singh proposed a toast to Dr. Hatta and "eternal friendship between India and Indonesia." The two countries, he said, were attempting a vast experiment in political democracy combined with planned economic development. "The foremost task before us is to raise the living standards of our people without in any way depriving them of their political and democratic freedoms.''
