dated November 3, 1955: Canada dam

In picturesque surroundings, with hills on either side, the Canada Dam (Massanjore Dam, main reservoir in West Bengal Government's Mayurakshi Project) was formally switched into operation by Mr. Lester B. Pearson, Foreign Minister of Canada, on November 1. The dam will irrigate 600,000 acres of agricultural land, mainly in West Bengal. The full amount of money for the project was advanced as a loan by the Government of India and Rs.10 crores came as Canada's help to India under the Colombo Plan. The Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, in a message said the Massanjore Dam had been fittingly named Canada Dam.
