Stevie Wonder: after two dozen Grammies, still hunting

His first album since 1995, `A Time To Love,' released

TOKYO: Pop music icon Stevie Wonder is not happy with the nearly two dozen Grammy Awards he has won over the years. He wants more.

"At this point in time I haven't had enough Grammies," Wonder, accompanied by his daughter, Aisha, said at a news conference here promoting his latest album, `A Time To Love.' It is his first album since 1995, and his first to debut in the top 10 in two decades.

Wonder said that although he has won more than his share of the coveted music awards, he used to be teased by the composer Henry Mancini that he was still way behind. "He won more than 30 I think," Wonder said. "So he would tell me that, at 19, I was just getting started."

Wonder said the main message of his album — like most of those before it — is simply one of love. "I would like to leave the world knowing that I brought and left the world lots of love and lots of love songs to sing." But he added that he is as concerned as ever with politics, and with the spread of terrorism throughout the world today. "There are people who say they serve God," he said. "But they cannot truly serve God because the God I know, the Allah that I know, would not want to kill people."

Wonder has recorded more than 30 Top 10 hits, and his Grammies include one for lifetime achievement. At 55, he has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. — AP
