Three best performing kendras to be given awards from next year: Pawar

NEW DELHI: The Government has decided to provide Rs. 1 lakh more to each Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) for setting up and upgradingthe multi-media network within two months.

At the end of a two-day national conference, Union Minister Sharad Pawar announced that the three best performing kendras would be given awards from next year. He said the conference on KVKs would be an annual event. The next one would be held in Hyderabad.

Brushing aside speculation on the fate of the kendras, Director-General of Indian Council of Agriculture Research Mangala Rai said all KVKs would remain with the ICAR. In the current Intellectual Property Rights regime, the KVKs would play an important role in terms of demonstrations of new varieties across the country.

There would be appropriate designations for KVK officials. "KVKs are powerful instruments of change in the agriculture sector and in the days to come, they would become more important," he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the conference and urged agriculture scientists to strive for a four per cent growth rate in the sector, for the country to achieve eight per cent growth.
