Pondicherry: The Chief Engineer of Pondicherry Public Works Department, V.Ramakrishnan, said here on Wednesday that the department had drawn up plans to erect bed dams at several points across the rivers in various commune limits in Pnodicherry for speedy recharge of underground water and also harvesting the rainwater. Three bed dams involving an expenditure of Rs 1.5 crores would be constructed across Pambayyar at Sagadapet, Sorapet and Sellipet villages. A plan to construct a Rs 60 lakh bed dam had also been proposed across the Guduvayar at Keezh Agraharam village near here. Each of Nettapakkam, Vadukuppam and T N Palayam villages would have one bed dam across Malattar and the PWD would spend Rs 2 crores for these structures.
Check dam
Mr Ramakrishnan said that the department was keen on preventing intrusion of seawater into the water bodies and a check dam cum causeway would be constructed at Araichikuppam with an estimated investment of Rs 1 crore. The proposal for construction of a two-lane bridge cum bed dam across Sankaraparani river at Manalipet with an investment of Rs 6 crores had also been intensively pursued by the department.
