Uday, Ashwini take titles; Navneeth claims junior crown

BANGALORE : The defending champion, Uday S. Athreya warmed up for the State Championship due next week, with a well-earned 12-10, 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 11-4 victory over arch rival, G. Ravishankar in the men's singles final of the M.S. Ramaiah State ranking table tennis championship at the HMT Sports Club hall here on Tuesday.

The top seed, B.M. Ashwini claimed the women's singles crown with a 11-3, 5-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 11-5 win over Shamika V. Desai in the final. In the junior section, A.R. Navneeth stunned the top seed, C.P. Karthik 11-8, 11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4 to claim the junior boys' singles title.

The results: Final: Men's singles: Uday S. Athryea bt G. Ravishankar 12-10, 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 11-4.

Junior boys: A.R. Navneeth bt C.P. Karthik 11-8, 11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4.

Sub-junior boys: Akhil V. Athresh bt Navneeth 10-12, 118,7-11, 14-12, 13-11.

Women's singles: B.M. Ashwini bt Shamika V. Desai 11-3, 5-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 11-5. Non-medallist singles: Shamika bt G. Yeshwanth 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-6.

KSP humbles ITI

Karnataka State Police (KSP) back from its All India Police meet, showed no weariness as it humbled ITI 25-22, 25-16, 27-25 to begin it's A-division volleyball super league campaign on a winning note in Bangalore on Wednesday. Earlier, former champion Postal too registered a straight-sets win over HMT at 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 for its first victory in two outings.

MEG is on top of the six-team super league with three wins, having got the better of a fighting ASC at 25-20, 27-25, 20-25, 18-25, 15-10 on Tuesday.

In another match, ITI downed HMT 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23. While ITI has two wins and two losses in the super league, HMT has lost all four matches played so far.
