Communicating the importance of setting up community radio


R.S. Baskkaran, senior lecturer, Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College, Vallam, was awarded the `Best Polytechnic Teacher Award' for 2005 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the polytechnic education system.

A release issued here by the polytechnic said the award was presented by N.R. Shetty, chairman, South West Region, AICTE, Bangalore, at the inaugural function of the eighth Indian Society For Technical Education Annual convention (Tamil Nadu and Pondichery section) held at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul.

Of 300 technical papers submitted at the convention from various polytechnics and engineering colleges, five papers were prepared and presented by members of the faculty of Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College.


S. Arul Selvan, lecturer, Department of Communication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, delivered a special lecture on `community radio experiments in India' under the auspices of the Department of Visual Communication of the J. J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, recently.

He explained the philosophy behind the concept of community radios, run by the people for the people and on behalf of the people. Community radios generally reflected the people's issues in their own dialect and are run by non-profit organisations.

Dr. Arul Selvan said that setting up a community radio station did not cost a lot. They are widely accepted by the Srilankan and Nepalese communities, whereas the experiment is yet to start in the country. Anna FM, started by Anna University, is the first campus radio in India.

S. Parthasarathy, head, Department of Visual Communication; Joyce Suganthini, lecturer of the department, spoke.

The students of the Social Work Department of the J. J. College of Arts and Science conducted an awareness programme on `alcoholism' at MCT Matriculation School at Arangal Namanasamudram. Swagurunathan, principal of the school; Cyril, teacher; and Ponnarasan, Physical Education teacher; spoke on the occasion. Bharathimohan and Ravikumar, both attached to the Khajamalai Ladies Association, Tiruchi, conducted cultural programmes to educate the students on the ill effects of the consumption of liquor and drugs.

The Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology of the Srinivasan College of Arts and Science, Perambalur, organised a seminar on `emerging trends in biosciences' recently. S. Sankaran, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women, was the chief guest. He motivated the students with new ideas on the relevant fields. The students actively participated in the interactive session that followed.

The Bio-Pearl Association of the Department of Bio-Chemistry of the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science, Perambalur, organised a special lecture programme for the benefit of life science students. N. Pradeep Kumar, project leader and programme coordinator, Bio-Informatics Institute of India, Hyderabad, delivered a special lecture on career and project prospects in life science. He called upon the students to be aware of recent trends and the importance of major problems in the field of life science. He also emphasised the importance of research.

At the interactive session, Mr. Pradeep Kumar clarified various doubts raised by the students.

The principal, R.M. Meenakshi, presided over the function. The head of the Department of Bio-Chemistry, P. Manju, spoke.

The Rotaract Club of the college has adopted Ranganathapuram village. The club has planned to organise camps and awareness programmes in the village and a planning meet was held in this regard recently. Members of the club visited the village and spoke to the president of the village panchayat, Chinnasamy, and the other ward members there.

A day-long training programme for Government officials was held at Thanthai Hans Roever College, Perambalur, recently. The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Management Studies and Department of Social Work of the college.

The director of the college, N. Durairaj, inaugurated the training programme, with the principal, V. Ganesan, in the chair.

College teachers M. Ganesh and K. Soundarapandiyan spoke on the importance of time management, while M. Robinson and N.S. Shibu spoke on personality development. In the afternoon session, V. Rahini and A. Rajendran delivered lectures on human psychology and P. Azhagesan and V. Rajan stressed the need for human resource management.

The programme, which saw the participation of officials including Tahsildars, BDO's and EO's, was conducted in response to the interest expressed by Collector M. Vivekanandan to the chairman of the college, K. Varadharaajen.

The PG Physics Department of the college organised a four-day in-service training programme for postgraduate physics teachers. Topics introduced in the Plus Two syllabus were discussed at the programme, which was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and NCSTC, New Delhi.
