Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti threatens to intensify agitation

Special Correspondent

NEW MOVEMENT: President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti and former Minister Vaijnath Patil addressing a public rally after hoisting a flag of the Hyderabad Karnataka region in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: The Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti, which boycotted the Golden Jubilee Rajyotsava Day celebrations and hoisted a flag of the Hyderabad Karnataka region here, has threatened to intensify its agitation demanding the amendment of Article 371 of the Constitution to provide special reservation in jobs and educational institutions in backward areas.

Samiti president and former Minister Vaijnath Patil said that the delay in amending Article 371 has resulted in the denial of the due share of opportunities to the people of the region.

Mr. Patil, who has been spearheading the agitation for more than a decade, said that the samiti proposes to hold agitations in all taluk headquarters of the districts in the Hyderabad Karnataka region throughout the year to pressure the Government to concede their demand at the earliest. The committee also plans to hold a convention in Gulbarga in January to discuss the future course of action.

He said Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh lacks political will and commitment to fulfil one of the long pending demands of the region. The former Minister Vishwanath Reddy Mudnal, who unfurled the flag, urged people to strengthen the samiti and enable it to press for the amendment of Article 371. He said the samiti will consider fielding a candidate in the next Assembly elections if necessary to fight for the development of the region.

Freedom fighter Vidyadhar Guruji, former legislator Hanumanthrao Desai, State unit president of the Janata Dal (United) Basavaraj Ingin, and AHINDA leader B.V. Chakravarthy participated in the meeting.
