It is a "conspiracy" by political rivals: CPI (I)

Kolkata:
The former West Bengal Minister, Narayan Biswas, who resigned on Monday following arson charges, surrendered in the district court in Balurghat on Wednesday. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days after his bail plea was rejected.

Earlier, a large group of supporters - mainly workers of his Communist Party of India (Marxist) - accompanied Mr. Biswas to the court. Party supporters wore black badges protesting against what CPI (I) leaders described as "a conspiracy hatched by political rivals to defame and discredit Mr. Biswas."
He is the first Minister to have resigned on criminal charges since the Left front came to power in 1977.
He was allegedly involved in the burning down of shops and houses at Ratanpur in the Gangarampur area of South Dinajpur district in 1988.
