Inter-state dacoit gang held

Rs. 1.33 cr. property recovered; seven persons held

ANANTAPUR: The district police nabbed a seven-member inter-state dacoit gang near Kalyanadurg on Wednesday. Property worth Rs. 1.33 crores was also recovered from their possession.

Giving the details to newspersons here Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain, stated that the modus operandi of the gang was to target lorries with valuable loads like cement and cigarettes and loot them by taking them off the highways.

They would board the chosen target as passengers and after travelling for some distance they would threaten the lorry driver and cleaner with lethal weapons.

Then they would take the vehicle to their chosen routes and off load the goods.

Recoveries

Those arrested included-- K. Ramachari, Manjunatha Reddy and B. Venkatesh of Chintamani, Yashwant Prabhukanth of Gulbarga, K. Gopal of Bellary, all from Karnataka, and K. Nagabhushanam of Garimekalapalli in Roddam mandal and Shah Nawaz of Hindupur, from Anantapur district.

Complimenting the police team led by the Anantapur DSP Karunakar, and consisting of Kalyanadurg CI B. Srinivasulu, and SIs -- Siva Reddy and Swamy -- and their staff, the SP said four lorries, 350 bags of cement, two Tata Sumos, four cell phones, three hunting sickles and Rs. 40,000 cash were recovered from their possession.

During the interrogation the gang confessed to the police that they had indulged in looting several cement and cigarette-laden lorries so far.

They had also conducted a recce for looting a Nandi idol from the Antaraganga temple in Kuderu mandal, abducting one owner of iron ore mines from Bellary, looting the silk saree loads to be sent to Kanchi..
