BANGALORE: Over 29 cases of gastroenteritis were treated at the Isolation Hospital on Wednesday. More than six cases came from Bomanahalli and three cases from T.G. Halli area. C.R. Thyagaraja, Director of Isolation Hospital, says the hospital has been receiving a large number of cases for the past few days. "Earlier, we used to get 8 to 10 cases but we get 15 to 20 cases every day now," he says. He says a lot of cases are coming from the outskirts of the city. "We are getting cases referred from Hoskote and Kargodi," he said.
Symptoms
Symptoms of this condition include nausea, vomiting abdominal cramps, and gastritis. Individuals with the illness are likely to get dehydrated, which may cause light-headedness, weakness, confusion, kidney failure and even death. Officials at the health centres in the city municipal council and Bangalore Mahangara Palike areas reported a rise in the number of gastroenteritis cases. Over 20 persons from Puttenahalli health centre were treated for gastroenteritis cases on Tuesday evening. The BMP health officer Tandav Murthy denied any increase in cases of gastroenteritis in health centres in BMP wards. He said in the past week, five cases of gastroenteritis had been referred to Isolation Hospital. There have not been many cases reported from the BMP areas because the civic authorities had taken precautions early on. Mr. Thyagaraja said usually cases of gastroenteritis happen 24 to 48 hours after the persons consumed contaminated food or water. As the cases continued to increase, he said, some areas of water supply in the city continue to be contaminated. "We need to find these sources and get them cleaned," he said.
