Two girls die in wall collapse

KURNOOL: Two girls were killed in a house collapse at Kothapalli in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, four children and two adults were sleeping in the house when the wall collapsed due to heavy rain in the early hours. Renuka (11) and her sister Sridevi (8) died while two others sustained injuries. Staff Reporter

Lightning claims life

GUNTUR: A student died and his friend suffered burns when lightning struck the terrace of the library building at Andhra Christian College in Guntur on Wednesday evening.

According to Kothapet police, Banavat Kasna Naik, 20, studying B. Com. second year, was on the way to library after attending classes. His friend Pathipati Rambabu, 22, was rushed to hospital. Staff Reporter

Man held on rape, murder charge

ADILABAD: Mandamarri police on Tuesday arrested Gotte Sampath of Kasipet the charge of raping and killing a minor girl. According to Mandamari CI, Md. Tajuddin, Sampath allegedly raped and killed a 12- year-old mentally unstable girl on Saturday. He hid the dead body in the almirah of his house. However, the body began emitting foul smell on Tuesday following which he was arrested. Staff Reporter

250 kg ganja seized

Kakinada: The police intercepted an ambassador car on its way to Tamil Nadu near Durga temple on the outskirts of Donkarayi in the agency area on Wednesday and on search found 250 kg of ganja concealed in the dickey. The ganja and the car were seized and a case was registered by the Donkarayi police. Correspondent

Two students drowned

Nellore: Two persons, including an Intermediate student, were drowned in Swarnamukhi river near Naidupet on Monday when they went for swimming. Master swimmers were called in and the bodies retrieved. Staff Reporter

Tension prevails

as student ends life

NALGONDA: Tension prevailed in Bhongir town on Wednesday following the alleged suicide of a college student reportedly due to eve teasing.

According to police sources, Polisetti Sujatha (19), a degree first year student of a private college, hanged herself in her house at Kammagudem in Mutakondur village of Yadgarigutta mandal on Tuesday. Hundreds of college students staged a dharna first at the area hospital where the body was kept and later at the local bus stand. Staff Reporter

Four students arrested on ragging charge

ONGOLE: Police on Wednesday arrested four students of Bapatla engineering college for allegedly ragging a junior student and driving him to commit suicide. Two other students are at large.

K. Alexander of Chinthagumpalli village in Chinnaganjam mandal, a B.Tech student, consumed pesticide in his house on October 26. His father lodged a complaint with the police stating that the victim was ragged by seniors. He named six students studying B.Tech second year. The police arrested M. Naresh Babu of Kesavarajupadu in Karamchedu mandal, M. Anil Kumar of Donasapudi in Chinnaganjam mandal, M. Mohanrao of Tenali and K. Mohana Rao of Baptla. Special Correspondent

Life term for six

in murder case

ONGOLE: Fast track court judge T. Sihmachalam on Wednesday sentenced six persons to life imprisonment for murdering Y. Sreenivasa Reddy.

According to prosecution, Sreenivasa Reddy was killed in Gopala Nagaram on June 19, 1998, by six persons with deadly weapons and bombs to settle scores. The wife of the deceased had, in her complaint, named Thangellamudi Ramesh, Sankhavarapu Prasad, Bhasha, Sk.John Bhasha, Kolluri Adeyya and Paddeti Ravi Prasad. The judge convicted them under Sections 147, 148 and 302 IPC and Section 3 and 5 of Explosive Substances Act.

Girl dies of scorpion bite

Nellore: A three-year-old girl reportedly died due to scorpion bite in B.J. Agraharam area of Jaladanki mandal. It appears the girl went to play in a neighbour's house, where she came in touch with an empty bag. She was rushed to Kavali and from there to Nellore for treatment but died while undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, a 48-year old woman, died due to chilly weather in Sangam mandal. Her body was found in the nearby forest. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: Mutavalli of Sultania Idgah S. Vakil Ahmed said the managing committee was constituted with M. Mohammad Pasha as the president, Abdul Masjid as vice-president, Anwar Basha (Secretary) and Syed Vakeel Ahmed (treasurer). Ten members were also nominated.- Staff Reporter

KADAPA: CPI and AISF leaders on Wednesday distributed two kgs of rice and a blanket each to some 100 families in Tilaknagar, Bahujan Nagar, NTR Nagar and Housing Board colony, whose houses collapsed in recent flooding of Kadapa town. CPI district Assistant Secretary P. Krishnamurthy and corporator M.V.R. Prasada Reddy charged revenue officials with being inept in assisting the flood-hit families.

SVU students' gesture

TIRUPATI: The students of Sri Venkateswara University's Department of political science and public administration have collected Rs.20,100 from public towards providing relief and rehabilitation to the earthquake victims of Kashmir. The cheque was handed over to Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy, to be forwarded to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.- Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Kadapa Deputy Mayor K. Nabi Rasool on Wednesday distributed school uniforms among poor, orphaned and physically challenged students of three municipal Urdu schools here. Mr. Rasool called upon voluntary organisations to extend assistance to poor and orphaned and physically challenged students to help them study further.

Woman swept away

KADAPA: A 70-year-old woman Lakshmamma was washed away in swirling water of Papaghni river at Nandimandalam in Pendlimarry mandal on Wednesday, according to the police. Her body was traced after some distance and fished out, police said.-Staff Reporter
