Staff Reporter

39 persons admitted with acute diarrhoeal disorder symptoms

CHENNAI: The health department of Chennai Corporation is keeping a close watch on the situation in Pulianthope, Vyasarpadi and other flood-affected parts of North Chennai where there are fears of water-borne diseases.

On Tuesday, the civic agency's Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet admitted 39 persons with acute diarrhoeal disorder symptoms, most of them from the affected parts. The Hospital Director B.Janarthanan said there was no cause of alarm since the hospital always admitted a few persons with the disorder during the rainy season.

"The persons who have been admitted come from various parts of the city. So there is no known outbreak in any one part of the city," he added.

However, if the number of persons getting admitted grows over the next few days, the health department will have a serious situation in its hands. Water had stagnated for more than four days in several parts of Pulianthope, Perambur, Vyasarpadi, Kolathur, Taramani and Madipakkam.

Relief for BPL

The State government has announced a relief package for residents living below poverty line(BLP). They can claim Rs.2,000 in cash, 10 kgs of rice and other benefits from the ration cards through specially appointed officers from Wednesday, a statement issued by the Chennai Collectorate said.

A list of the beneficiaries has been listed at the respective ration shops and Tahsildar's offices.

On Tuesday, the Corporation took up a massive cleanliness drive in North Chennai, concentrating its efforts mainly on its Tondiarpet zone. More than 300 conservancy staff took up the efforts.
