Special unit to help blast victims `wisely' invest ex-gratia


  • Special cell to be headed by Divisional Commissioner G.K. Marwah
  • To include chartered accountants and financial analysts

    New Delhi: In a pro-active step, Delhi government on Wednesday announced the setting up of a special cell to help victims of Saturday's serial blasts invest their money profitably.

    In an emergency meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, it was decided for the first time ever to set up a special cell headed by Divisional Commissioner G.K. Marwah to help the victims invest the compensation in profitable ventures.

    The cell would include chartered accountants and financial analysts.

    Delhi government had announced an ex-gratia Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in Saturday's serial bomb blasts in the city.

    Ex-gratia amount for minors was put at Rs 1 lakh.

    The Centre had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh, taking the total amount to be given to the kin to Rs 4 lakh.

    The state government also decided to give Rs 1 lakh to those permanently disabled. Such persons were also to be supplied artificial limbs at State's costs.

    Those seriously injured would be given Rs 50,000 and those with minor injuries would be given Rs 5,000.

    The injured were receive free treatment in government hospitals while those choosing to get treatment from private hospitals would be reimbursed the expenses incurred.

    Delhi government also decided to give a reward of Rs 2 lakh each besides regularising the driver's contractual services and giving out-of-turn promotion to the conductor of the Delhi Transport Corp bus who had shown great presence of mind and bravery in handling the situation after an unclaimed bag, which turned out to be a bomb, was found in the vehicle in Govindpuri area of South Delhi on October 29. -- UNI
