Chidambaram responds

Please refer to your `Letters to the Editor' column in the issue dated November 3, 2005, under the heading "Great but... "

While I do not wish to offer any comments on the opinions of your correspondents, I thought some facts should be highlighted for the benefit of your readers.

The campaign to persuade assessees to file their returns before 31st October was launched over a month ago, and I had made several appeals to assessees to file their returns before the last date. We believe that the campaign has yielded results.

There were no special security arrangements made when I visited the Income Tax Office in Chennai on 31st October, 2005.

There was no queue at any counter, much less long queues or long hours of waiting or any inconvenience to anyone. The time taken to file a return was about 30 seconds.
