Welcome verdict

The death penalty awarded to the Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Arif in the Red Fort attack case is welcome though it has taken five years for the verdict to be delivered. But the life sentence and seven years rigorous imprisonment to his accomplices are appalling. They were in the know of the crime and are more guilty because they are Indian nationals. No leniency should be shown to those who have no qualms about killing innocent human beings for a so-called cause.

By sentencing Arif to death for his role in the terror strike, the court has sent out a strong signal to potential terrorists. They must pay for waging war against the Union of India and spilling the blood of innocent people.

The main worry in such terror attacks is not just the strike. For every terrorist who comes to India from across the border to plan and execute a blast, there should be at least five persons sympathising and supporting his cause. No person can execute such an act all by himself. How we are going to spot these sympathisers, wean them away, and bring them back to the mainstream is a million dollar question.

This refers to the article "The Lashkar-e-Taiba, in theory and practice" (Nov. 3). It has only stressed the obvious, albeit mildly. With plenty of hate philosophy, based on blatant lies and twisted history, directed against Hindus and India being taught in Pakistan's madrassas and state-run educational institutions, brainwashing generations of Pakistanis to grow up as India-haters, who are we dealing with in the so-called "peace talks"?

K.S. Ramakrishnan,
Chennai
