Belgaum
Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Three councillors of the Belgaum City Corporation Council have submitted their resignation to Mayor Vijay Pandurang More protesting against the controversial resolution supporting the demand for transferring Belgaum to Maharashtra. While the former Deputy Mayor Satish Gorgonda and advocate N.B. Nirwane submitted their resignation through veteran Kannada leader and former Mayor Siddangouda Patil on Thursday, Jayashree Malgi personally submitted her resignation to the Mayor recently. Mr. Patil, accompanied by Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee President Ashok Chandargi and a few other Kannada activists, met Mr. More at his office and handed over the resignation letters of Mr. Gorgonda and Mr. Nirwane. It may be recalled here that the action committee had called upon all Kannadiga councillors in the Council to resign to protest against the pro-Maharashtra resolution of the council where the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti is in power. The committee had observed that the resolution would amount to contempt of court since the boundary dispute was before the Supreme Court. The committee has urged the State Government to supersede the corporation, which was toeing a confrontationist line with the former by adopting such a resolution ignoring the fact that the apex court is yet to dispose of the suit filed by Maharashtra.
