IN QUICKER TIME: The President of Continental Airlines, Jeffery A. Smisek (left) with the Senior Director, India, Laurent Recoura (centre), and Vice-President, Europe, Middle East and India, Jim Summerford, launching the Delhi-New York non-stop service in New Delhi on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Continental Airlines, the world's sixth largest airline, has become the first global carrier to operate non-stop service between India and the U.S., with its launch of daily flights between Delhi and New York/Newark.

"Continental is making history by linking these two great nations with non-stop flights for the first time,'' said Jeffery Smisek, the airline's President, who travelled to Delhi on the inaugural eastbound flight on Wednesday night.

The flights cut travel time between Delhi and New York by over two-and-half hours, and significantly shorten existing journey times between Delhi and most U.S. mainland cities.

Delhi is the sixth trans-Atlantic route launched by Continental in 2005, consolidating its position as the leading U.S. carrier across the Atlantic in terms of the number of cities served — 25 in 14 countries. In addition, the airline launched non-stop service between New York and Beijing in June this year.

Joining Mr. Smisek at the launch celebrations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were Delhi's Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, U.S. Ambassador to India, David C. Mulford, and Continental's Vice-President for Europe and India, Jim Summerford. The flights are operated with a 283-seat Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying 48 passengers in the Business First and 235 in Economy class configurations. The flight departs Delhi daily at 11.45 p.m., arriving at New York/Newark at 5.05 a.m. the next day. The return flight departs New York/Newark daily at 8.50 p.m., arriving at Delhi at 9.15 p.m. the next day. Flying times are approximately 15 hours and 50 minutes westbound and 13 hours and 55 minutes eastbound.
