A silent Deepavali this year, thanks to SC ruling

To everybody's surprise, the `Deepavali' festival this year was unusually free from both noise and environmental pollution.

The ruling by the Supreme Court, prohibiting the bursting of crackers during late night and in the early morning, had a telling effect on the law-abiding citizens, who did not burst deafening fire-works during the wee hours.

Even as the citizens were strictly obeying the apex court's orders, the mobile patrolling by the police personnel throughout Tiruchi made many citizens to desist from bursting `hazardous crackers'.

The timely tips given by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to the members of the public on the `dos' and `donts' while using crackers had also helped in creating awareness among the public.

Full credit should be given to the people, younger generation in particular, in abiding by the advice of the Court.

However, it was a tough task for the sanitary workers of the Corporation in cleaning the streets.

Their task would have got more simplified, had the residents themselves collected the bits of papers strewn in front of their residences and deposited the same in the dustbins.
