Residential areas lack basic amenities

Bad roads, uncleared garbage among the main problems

Pondicherry: Providing basic amenities for areas such as Brindavanam residential colony is a tough task for the municipal authorities. With development in all sectors the pressure on land is also increasing.

At present there are no elected municipal bodies here and all municipalities and commune panchayats are being manned by special officers.

Some of the residential pockets around the boulevard limits lack basic amenities such as roads. Mounds of garbage can be seen in the residential areas that had associated themselves with the growth of the Union Territory.

Brindavanam housing colony in Reddiarpalayam Assembly constituency is among the important housing areas. It has more than its share of bad roads thanks to the recent rain. The roads have become slushy and umotorable in most parts in the colony.

A.M. Krishnamoorthy (Bharatiya Janata Party) elected from Reddiarpalayam constituency told this correspondent on Thursday that the Pubilc Works Department should have first constructed the pump houses as part of the underground drainage scheme. Usually, stretches to lay sewage pipelines would be cleared first and pump houses constructed subsequently. But work done the other way round has added to the woes of the residents.

The situation was similar in some other areas such as Jawahar Nagar.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said the Oulgaret Municipality should repair the roads in Brindavanam and other housing colonies on priority. If there was delay he would launch a movement to ensure that the residents did not pay house and property taxes.
