NSS welcomes move to probe graft charges

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: G. Sukumaran Nair, assistant secretary of Nair Service Society (NSS), has welcomed the State Government's decision to inquire into corruption charges against the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), saying that it will help end graft, if any, in the temple administrative body.

Mr. Nair told The Hindu that the NSS was for a free-and-fair inquiry that would in no way hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The society's demand for a just investigation was aimed at preserving the sanctity of places of worship, thereby ensuring Hindu unity and integrity. A resolution passed by the society regarding the demand was with a positive intention of freeing temple administration of corruption.

Mr. Nair said the Government should take extra care to protect the autonomy of the Board while streamlining its functioning. The proposed Ordinance should be drafted in such a way that loopholes for corruption in the Board were plugged. He said the Ordinance should leave no room for diversion of Devaswom funds for the needs of the Government in any emergency.
