Orders on Thiagarajan bail plea on Monday

Special Correspondent

Counsel claims Deputy Mayor's family living in fear

CHENNAI: Orders on the anticipatory bail application of Chennai Corporation Deputy Mayor Karate R. Thiagarajan will be delivered on November 7.

Principal Sessions Judge P. Murugesan reserved his orders after hearing K.S. Dinakaran, counsel for Mr. Thyagarajan, and City Public Prosecutor T.V. Ganesh, on Thursday.

Mr. Dinakaran said Mr. Thiagarajan's family was "living in a hostile atmosphere, hounded by the ruling junta." The prosecution must either say that Mr. Thiagarajan was facing cases and was an absconder, or admit that no crime had been registered against him.

Accusing the police of bias, counsel said though the Deputy Mayor's wife had complained to the Greater Chennai City Commissioner of Police, stating that she had received a "threatening letter" purportedly written by the personal assistant of a Minister, the police had not registered a First Information Report. He said the apprehension of the petitioner that he might be arrested on foisted charges was genuine. The Director-General and the Commissioner of Police must clarify their position to the court.
