TIRUCHI: A major quantum of the surplus discharge from the Mettur reservoir was diverted into the Coleroon river from the Upper Anaicut near here on Thursday. The realisation was gradually increased since Wednesday evening and touched a maximum of 84,743 cusecs on Thursday morning. Of this, 64,320 cusecs was diverted into the Coleroon while the discharge into the Cauvery was maintained at around 20,100 cusecs throughout the day. The district administration had requested people residing in low-lying areas to move to safer places. The realisation at the Upper Anaicut touched 85,988 cusecs by 5 p.m. on Thursday. It was expected to hover around 75,000 to 80,000 cusecs until the inflow into the Mettur reservoir came down. But the authorities saw no cause for concern. On Thursday, no major problem was reported as the discharge into the Coleroon was much less than last week's high of over 1.60 lakh cusecs. Through the day, Collector K. Nanda Kishore inspected the vulnerable areas along the banks of the Coleroon and other parts of the district to ensure a state of preparedness. He also visited the Koothapar tank near Tiruverambur and inspected tank bunds. Mr. Kishore said all 14 Panchayat unions have been instructed to have adequate stocks of sand bags.
