Flyover scam: more time sought

Prosecution of two IAS officers

CHENNAI: The police have sought more time from the court to submit the Centre's sanction to prosecute two IAS officers in the alleged "flyover scam" during the previous DMK rule.

The four-week time granted by the court expires in the middle of this month when the police are expected to inform it about the position on the sanction, official sources said.

On May 26 the Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB CID) submitted the charge sheet, nearly four years after filing the First Information Report (FIR). But the final report has not been taken on file as it does not contain the Central sanction to prosecute serving IAS officers, P. Kolappan, a former Commissioner of the Chennai Corporation, and S. Malathi, a former Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

The sanction is required under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The charge sheet has been filed for offences under sections 120-B, 409 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. After submitting the charge sheet and its perusal by the court, the investigating agency has been seeking time for submitting the documents for Central sanction. When contacted, a senior police officer said the sanction had not been received.
