CHENNAI: The Customs Department (seaport) took a step forward on Thursday with the inauguration of a round-the-clock on-line monitoring facility of container movement. The new software module will help to monitor the container movement from Chennai Port to the Inland Container Depots (ICD) and the Container Freight Stations (CFS). The in-gate and out-gate of the Chennai Container Terminal Limited (CCTL) have been provided with computer connectivity and linked to the Custom House server. S. Subramanian, Commissioner of Customs (Sea Exports), Custom House, Chennai, who inaugurated the facility, told presspersons that the importer or his agent could now submit the request for movement of the container from the Port to the destination ICD/CFS in a floppy at the service centre of the Custom House for data entry. The details will then be electronically transmitted to the sections concerned for on-line verification and grant of permission for transhipment of the container. Once the permission is granted to move the container, its details will be entered by the Customs officer manning the exit gate of CCTL and the details will be transmitted online to the ICD/CFS concerned. On arrival at the destination, the time will be entered in the system by the custom authorities at the ICD/CFS to complete the process. The on-line facility will eliminate delays in processing transhipment requests, cut down paper work and lead to greater transparency and assist the Department's effective monitoring. To facilitate the exporters, 24-hour examination of export cargo facility at the three CFS has been introduced. Ennarasu Karunesan, Chief Executive Officer of CCTL, S.R. Baruah, Additional Commissioner of Customs, and were present on the occasion.
