DEHRA DUN: The Uttaranchal Government will select and train 3,305 persons as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) under the National Rural Health Mission this year. Announcing this here on Thursday, a senior official of the State Health Department said that the activists were expected to generate health consciousness among the rural folks and guide them to the nearest medical aid centre. "ASHA will prove a boon to the people living in the interior areas where there are no doctors or medicines," he said. Although Uttaranchal boasts of a high literacy rate, the women and children suffer from malnutrition. This problem, the official said, could be reduced if the women and children received better food and nutrients. "The women who looked after the entire family will have to be asked to look after themselves rather than get neglected," said Rita Khanduri, a social activist.
