Teacher, Vidya volunteer drowned

Kakinada: A teacher and a Vidya volunteer met a watery grave when the makeshift bridge collapsed while they were crossing the Pithapuram branch canal on Thursday.

Koppisetti Satyanarayana, 53, headmaster of MPP Elementary School, and Jyothula Nagalakshmi, 19, were on their way to the school at Surampet. Their bodies were retrieved later in the evening. - Correspondent

Red sanders seized

Nellore: The Venkatagiri town police, on a tip-off, seized 42 red sander logs valued at Rs. 2 lakhs after intercepting a lorry at Paravolu village on Thursday. The lorry crew, however, escaped on seeing the officials. The consignment was being transported to Chennai. - Staff Reporter

M.G. Gopal is Secretary to Governor

HYDERABAD: M.G. Gopal, IAS, has been appointed Secretary to Governor with effect from November 5.

A former Chairman of the Metro Water Supply Board, Mr. Gopal is presently Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society. - Special Correspondent

Arms dump unearthed

NALGONDA: The Devarakonda police recovered a major dump consisting of a single barrel gun, a large number of hand grenades and detonators, at Kalipoyina thanda, a hamlet of Yelamalamanda village of Chandampet mandal on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police M.M. Bhagwat told newsmen that the material was found in two plastic drums.

Forest official trapped

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday arrested Deputy Forest Ranger of Koilakonda in Mahabubnagar K. Srinivasulu on the charge of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The official was found possessing properties worth over Rs. 23 lakhs during simultaneous searches at his houses in Hyderabad and Atchampet of Mahabubnagar, ACB officials said in a press release. - Staff Reporter

Hostel inmate dies

after falling in sump

Mahabubnagar: Tension prevailed at the Social Welfare Hostel for Boys here on Thursday following the death of Raju, 8, in the hostel sump.

According to the police, Raju, a second standard student residing in the hostel, reportedly slipped into the sump on Wednesday night while he was drawing water from it.

Members of Kula Vyathireka Porata Samithi staged a dharna and demanded action against warden Prakash Swamy. Joint Collector Satya Prasad Rao suspended the warden and announced an ex gratia of Rs. 30,000 to the next of kin of Raju. - Correspondent

Man sentenced to life for murder

KURNOOL: A man was sentenced to life by District and Sessions Judge Krishna Mohan Reddy for murdering wife. According to prosecution, M. Pedda Maddileti, allegedly murdered his wife Pullamma by hitting on her head with a hammer on September 29 last year. The Judge awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000.- Staff Reporter

MADANAPALLE: The entire town of Madanapalle will have drinking water supplied through pipelines and cisterns within a week, according to Municipal Commissioner B. Nagabhushanam. Correspondent

Five injured in

separate accidents

Nellore: Five persons were injured in separate accidents in Nellore district on Thursday.

At Baddevolu crossroads of Manubolu mandal, a mother and daughter were injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling turned turtle. They were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. At Venkatchalasatram, two persons sustained injuries, when an autorickshaw and scooter collided on the national highway.

Minister told to close vent

KURNOOL: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked the Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah to take appropriate steps for closure of construction vent in the Sunkesula barrage. MP Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy told the Chief Minister that problem has been persisting for years. He said the vent was causing fast depletion of water from the reservoir.- Staff Reporter
