BANGALORE: Sixteen families were rendered homeless when a building collapsed during the recent spell of rain in the city. Over 50 people had a miraculous escape when the building (No 18) housing the families collapsed in Ward No 80, Fruit Street, off Kamaraj Road. About a century-old "Kantha Nilayam" building owned by an advocate had provided shelter to the families till it came down tumbling in the rain on October 25. All the occupants of the cluster of houses were lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
Daily wage labourers
Families who depended on daily labour for their livelihood were residing in the building as tenants and were paying a monthly rent ranging from Rs. 750 to Rs. 1,250, said R.B. Manjunath, one of the victims. The front portion of the building collapsed making it difficult for residents to enter their houses. TV sets, vessels, gas stoves, clothes, foodgrains and furniture were damaged or destroyed, the tenants said. Now, some of the families have been forced to live on the streets and some others under the roof of a building under construction.
Compensation
"Not a single official came here to listen to our problem," says Latha, a mother of two children who expects the Government to compensate the tenants. Tenants of the building have filed a complaint with the Bharatinagar Police. They have submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Revenue Officer of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike demanding compensation for loss of goods.
