NEW DELHI: Delhi will host the third Cochlear Implant Group of India Conference that is expected to see the participation of over 300 physicians from across the world. The three-day conference beginning here this Friday is aimed at exchanging information and updating physicians about new developments in the field. Speaking about the workshop-cum-conference, Armed Forces Medical Services Director-General V.K. Singh, who will be performing a live surgery on Friday, said: "We will be operating on a four-year-old boy at the workshop. The country currently has a population of 10 million deaf of which one million are profoundly deaf. The country has good surgeons and sound technical know-how for conducting surgery. However, the implants being used for conducting cochlear surgeries are being imported. It is an expensive implant and is beyond the reach of most people in the country." He said experts from countries including the US, Britain and Australia would be attending the conference. "We hope to exchange information on advancement in the field which will be processed and used for treating our patients at home." A unique feature of the conference will be live surgeries in which conventional and minimal invasive techniques will be used for cochlear implants, said the organising secretary, J.M. Hans.
