This Day That Age
Lions in Gir forest found Prime Minister Nehru a friendly visitor and so made friends with him. Spending over 12 hours in the sprawling, 500 square miles of Gir forest which is the only home of lions in Asia, Mr. Nehru told a public meeting at Keshod, near Junagadh, that he had an "exhilarating experience" watching the king of the forest in his own den. He saw half a dozen lordly lions in the forest. Even as he was proceeding along a road in the forest he saw a pair of lions just 60 feet away from his car. "The lions looked at us as we were gazing and thus made friends with us." Mr. Nehru said the lion population of the Gir should be protected.
